The learning of mathematics follows a continuous and spiral dynamic, in which experiences, knowledge construction, and the development of logical and abstract reasoning play a fundamental role in successive learning stages, starting from the early years of schooling. Failure in this subject often has its roots in incomplete or dysfunctional learning processes, resulting from a weak foundation in the mathematical framework.

Given the importance of mathematics in both scientific education and citizenship, it is urgent to intervene and promote the quality of mathematics learning. The Hypatiamat Project was created with the aim of contributing to academic success in this field by capitalizing on students' natural interest in technological environments. It is supported by the University of Minho, the University of Coimbra, and the Coimbra Higher School of Education.

It is widely recognized that the early years of schooling are essential for the construction of mathematical knowledge (such as the number system, number sense and operations, mental calculation strategies, spatial awareness, etc.), as well as for the development of logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Thus, acknowledging the inherent continuous and spiral nature of the curriculum, it is crucial to provide, during these formative years, a wide range of varied experiences, contexts, and materials that foster a solid understanding to support and not compromise future learning.

In this regard, one notable example among the many components of Hypatiamat is the promotion of mental calculation skills from the early years of schooling. This is achieved, alongside other methodologies, through the use of serious games specifically designed for this purpose, which have been implemented in several schools across the country with very encouraging results. To capitalize on the impact of this practice, the 9th Hypatiamat Inter-School Mental Calculation Championship will take place in Braga, with participation from 4th-grade students and the support of Braga City Council, among other entities.

The final of the 9th Hypatiamat Inter-School Mental Calculation Championship will be held at Forum Braga, in Braga, on June 9th, 2025, at 8:30 p.m.
